Health classes explained
Four rate tiers: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—what they signify and what affects your placement.
Insurers group term policies by rate class. While different companies use varying titles, the framework stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes labeled Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then table ratings for elevated-risk scenarios. Those using tobacco follow a similar structure with higher premiums.
What underwriters look at
Weight-to-height ratio, blood pressure and lipid panels, cardiac or cancer disease in your immediate relatives before retirement age, traffic record, current prescriptions, employment field and leisure pursuits, and nicotine consumption patterns. Preferred Plus demands excellent findings across nearly every factor; Preferred is forgiving of minor issues; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed diseases including controlled blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health section asks for honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quote will reflect that assignment; underwriting finalizes it later. Uncertain about your category? Request quotes at two different tiers and see the difference, then your application will settle it. Overstating your health won't reduce your actual cost; it only makes the estimate unreliable.
Susman Insurance Agency specializes in matching you with carriers whose approval rules work well for your particular situation, which typically has more impact than focusing only on the advertised rate.
